Controversial Games +/-

The game I'm going to pick for positive/Negative controversies will be: RYSE: Son of Rome

This game had a good impact on the Next Gen consoles with this being one of the first games released on the Xbox one. It was one of the first games where we witnessed the new power of the consoles and what kind of graphics we could expect to see to come soon.

This game was the first to be set in Rome for a long time with also adding in an arena mode for online or single battle which again had either never been seen before or has not been seen in a game for a long time which again added to it's unique appeal. Many of the people who brought the game where mostly pleased and left speechless by the type of game RYSE was and especially because it was the first of its kind released in a long time it quickly became poplar with people who enjoyed history as well as Roman culture too.

This is a hack and slash type game and did cause a little stir with the executions in the game but this is part of the game and adds to the realism.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R_8qDHl62Y This is a video showing all of the executions in the game and how to perform them. There is also another mode that is useful to gain experience points as well as practice at performing executions. The arena mode is very realistic to being a gladiator and this is something that hasn't been done in a long time or never before in a game so this was something I found really interesting and loved watching gameplay of it as well as playing it myself.
"This was one of the first Next Gen console games to be released and it exceeded the expectations of what it would be which was also so this gave the impression that Next gen would be revolutionary to the gaming industry.

The Twitter post, which has been removed, said, “By the time #Ryse ships for #XboxOne, we will have served the crunching team more than 11,500 dinners throughout development. #RyseFacts.”

Crunching is an industry term for long overtime hours for development teams working to meet deadlines, and has been met with furor on the Twitter-sphere.
Ben Kuchera, who operates the Penny Arcade Report, chastised Crytek for the remarks about crunching.
“AAA development is brutal, and you rarely see your family. We advertise this like it's impressive! #rysefacts,” Kuchera said, adding the same hash tag.

Others have taken to using the #RyseFacts hash tag to express disgust with the game’s labor policies.
One poster wrote, “You Know what people want to hear about from #RyseFacts? Human suffering from the dev team.”

Another pointed the finger at Crytek for its mismanagement leading to the long hours and harsh deadlines for the Ryse: Son of Rome development team." http://www.examiner.com/article/controversy-over-xbox-one-exclusive-ryse-son-of-rome-tweet-about-crunching

This was taken from the website Examiner and this showed that the Developers of Ryse son of Rome had to be rushed and this gave the workers very little time to get the game ready to hit the shelves exactly when the new Xbox One was going to be released. This may have caused a lot of tension between the developers and the customers on how they were treating them and so this could have caused a possible loss in sales due to this.

"A Federal Trade Commission investigation uncovered an undisclosed paid endorsement deal between Microsoft Studios and Machinima Inc. Microsoft Studios paid for fake organic reviews, and bound Machinima Inc. to “not portray [Microsoft], the Xbox One, or the Launch Titles in a negative manner”. Ryse: Son of Rome was specifically listed in the FTC document as being one of the titles to receive fake reviews, and price quotes for these reviews range between $15,000 and $30,000". This shows that there is more controversy over this game than first thought, I personally thought this was  a good game but it looks like
many would agree but for a select few they would of thought that the new game didn't meet the standards they were personally expected and so many of the views/buys for the game went down due to the look and peoples opinions which matched to some of the controversial elements which could have harmed it.

Object-Oriented Design: What you need to know

OOD (Object-oriented Design)

Simplified understanding - Object Oriented Design is the concept that forces programmers to plan out their code in order to have a better flowing program,  "fields or state can be thought of current conditions within an object. A banana's state would be its shape and colour and size Methods or behaviors can be thought of its acting. With the banana, whether it is ripe or dry can be the behaviour" - Stack Overflow

Image result for C++Re-usability - C++ has a very good way of being Re-usable and this has given it a better edge over it's competitors due to the fact it is easier to copy over work and copy over all the detail and still be able to make very little changes and then have it as it's own code.
so what any program make a call to that function and it should work exactly the same.

Maintenance - It would need to be tested to make sure it is capable of managing it's load and how well It'll cope when updates are applied and the techniques have been evolved. It should have a very good a clean functionality and this will also make it more easier to accomplish their goal of having the easiest and best ways to make and new revolutionary games.

Efficiency -  OOD has not got the greatest efficiency but it can be optimized to be improved by a substantial amount, It will be compared to other coding formats such as java script and C# but these may have better efficiency but they're lacking in other areas when C++ does well especially with it's re-usability which is a lot better than what is compared against. OD design is less about efficiency and more about re-usability, code readability, easy documentation, structure, and more importantly modularity.

Real-world modeling - A real life example of ODD would be a car or any other vehicle, you would also need to take into consideration the colour the car or any patters it may have. You'd also have to consider how and the way it turns left and right as well as moving forwards and backwards too.

Collaboration and sharing - The modeling techniques of OOD provide an interface between creative designers (who can express their requirements without having to know the detail of the code) and programmers (who can use the models to implement the code). Your OOD can be shared with other members of your creative team.

Communication - Our blueprints communicate by seeing if an action has occurred and if so then it will be communicating to see if it need to move to the next blueprint or whether it should stay on itself and other type vise versa examples.

Quality assurance - To make sure the game works well would be to conduct a small trial test to see everything looks and controls the way it should and if it doesn't then changes will need to be made but if the game appears to have no bugs or glitches with it then the game will be able to go straight to the next process. You  could also seek outside help from professional game testers and they would test the game to a heavy extent.
Inheritance - inheritance is the principle of class hierarchy. it is the ability for one object to take on the statues savories functionality of another object. This shows the other objects that there is a order that they have to follow. A real-world example of inheritance is genetic inheritance. We all receive genes from both our parents that then define who we are. We share qualities of both our parents, and yet at the same time are different from them. Objects in OOD and do the same thing parent classes have child classes (also known as super classes and subclasses respectively) which can have the same properties of the parent class, and can define new states, behaviors, and functionality of their own. In object-oriented programming, inheritance enables new objects to take on the properties of existing objects.

Game Objects -

sprites - Theses are created items that can be used as objects, characters and rooms which then have properties added to make them functional.
characters - These are the playable and AI created users and these will normally be what you can control and use to roam around and do the missions or objective of the game and so this is a valuable and important side to creating games and setting them up.

weapons - These are what your characters can use to either attack or defend themselves from attackers or what ever they might be fighting or trying to accomplish, These can be vital if you are going to make a game with attacking being involved.

rooms - These will be enterable areas where you will be able to maybe search for items or fight enemies, These will be detailed and have good items involved too so sprites will be added and create the surrounding to make it more realistic.

walls - These are put in place to stop the player going out of the created area otherwise it would leave to problems so it is important to have a wall around the area in that sense.

scenery - This will be the background as well as the surroundings of the game such as environment and this will benefit the look of realism in the game and will add to the game being authentic so it is important to have a Scenery with a good sense to it and match the feel of what you're trying to achieve.

instances - This would be important when operating OOD as this will allow the player to set up scenarios and then this will allow for them to create choices and effect areas or gameplay.

rewards - Rewards would be used for giving the player a sense of achievement and this would allow for a leveling system or something to a similar state which would give them a reason to play the game after they had completed the original game.

Object properties:

colour - Colour is important to distinguish as this can help players recognize pickups such as health or weapons and so colour is a important factor to have in the game as it leads to easier recognition.

size - Getting the correct size for an object is important to get otherwise items will seem out of size as things will be bigger or smaller than they should be and this would lead to trouble due to un-proportioned object sizes.

speed - Getting the correct speed of character model walking pace is important as if not perfect it will seem out of place and will not be as good sue to the timing mishap.

movement - This is very similar to speed as getting the timing for movement correct otherwise it will not look right and the game will not be as good, another thing that will be good to look out for will be getting the right look like making sure the arm moves in the correct way and has the right movement.

sounds - These are important as this adds atmosphere and tension and without this the games that do so well would not be consider as good so it is important to achieve this in the correct way.

health - This will depend on if you lose lots of health or little bits from certain attacks. This is something that will be able to be edited in blueprints and so this will be an easy thing to apply into the game.

lives - This is something that most people need to consider when making a game and what to do when the game is set and how life systems work and what happens when you lose a life or run out of lives and so this is an important thing to consider.

Unit 6 - P4 Analysis of a Computer Game

Analysis of a Computer Game
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58Pspqx0XGs

This is the 3rd installment of the Black ops series and this is the most futuristic Call Of Duty to date, This is the 16th proper installment in Call Of Duty and this time has added new features for the first time which could be seen as good ideas and bad ones too. This is the call of duty which ,ay be one of the last futuristic ones for a while so this will see how well it does and if they would want to do more ones like this or would they want to take it back in the past again which where so successful.

Mission 1 – Black Ops
Mission 2 - New World
Mission 3 - In Darkness
Mission 4 - Provocation
Mission 5 - Hypocenter
Mission 6 - Vengeance
Mission 7 - Rise & Fall
Mission 8 - Demon Within
Mission 9 - Sand Castle
Mission 10 - Lotus Tower
Mission 11 - Life

Mission One is where the campaign starts with your character being sent to Cairo, Egypt where the prime minister is being held  captive by rebels and are torturing him and his soldiers. This leads to you and your unit being sent in as a rescue team and must help free him before he is made an example of. Before you start the campaign it gives you a little sense of customization where you can change the face, helmet and body armour as well as guns and load outs. Going back to the first mission after you try and escape there is a huge battle as you try and escape in a armored vehicle, When the vehicle that you are on crashes you have to hold off while your  EVAC comes back around to get you out but as it arrives there is an explosion and this then leads to you being left behind. As security robots surround your position your come out of consciousness  and try and fight it but you get your arms ripped off and it stomps out your leg leaving you defenseless and then the robot start punching you trying to kill you when an friendly saves you and helps you get out. This sets up for whole game by giving you improvements and to join  a special unit designed to be better with technology and weapons.

Mission two is the next mission is a look at how to use your new abilities and how you can use them in battle, it also introduces you to the team and who is in this unique team. To me this was an extremely boring mission and came across very repetitive and would be easier to learn by yourself especially considering it's an 18 rated game.  To me this shows that they know younger audiences are playing the game, This missions has little story but shows why technology has expanded as much as it has and what positive came out of the attack but from what you know so far it is really good.

The third mission is in Singapore and allows you to be joined by your ex soldier Hendricks who helped you fight the enemies. In the first mission he had the same surgery to stay with your character, this already builds a bond between you and Hendricks. You see the people of Singapore who have been left out and left in super storms to fend for themselves and so this allows for gangsters to take over and have their rule applied,  Civilians are used as trading and you see a deal which leads to the death of both which then turns into a gun fight between you and the rest of the immortals (Bad Guys) you will also have to battle a storm in this mission where you have to deploy a hook of some sort to stop the wind taking you which can travel at 150mph as well as rough waters so this makes fighting the enemy even more trickery but it is a challenge which I found welcoming. This then lead to a fight on the docks where you had to secure a container and then download information which lead to the next part of your mission.

The fourth mission into the campaign is a continued sequence from the third mission and follows the same mission in Singapore, this follows the hunt for a brother and sister who are in charge of the immortals and do not like outside interference so this makes you an enemy and are quickly targeted by them when they discover you and Hendricks are in a meeting with one of their soldiers. This leads to a gun fight and the brother getting killed. This then leads there mission to become a evacuation mission and have to push threw waves and waves of soldiers to reach the area where you have to escape but after fighting and advancing through many areas your helicopter is caused to abort and change the pick up position. This then leads you to have to battle threw a gigantic tree and fight off the enemies and progress towards the new place, this leads to you needing to get a speedboat and shoot the enemies and guard the boat while Hendricks drives the boat to your pickup.

The Fifth mission still in Singapore in a secret CIA base which has been leaked to the world after your team except you and Hendricks went dark and turned their back on the army and special forces. This then leads to you fighting one of your former teammates and defending against a army of robot soldiers. This then concludes the boss fight between you and one of the soldiers who betrayed you but before he dies Hendricks your team member has to drain his mind leaving him brain dead to gather information about there motives and what they're planning. The sister who's brother you killed has her army surrounding the CIA base which was leaked by the traitors and this then leads to you having to  fight your way out to escape, They also flood the base and so you have to fight against robots until Hendricks opens the door flooding the room so you'll be able to escape and go and rescue your friend.

The sixth mission is still continuing in Singapore and is now about rescuing your technical supporter Kane who is based in a police/Cia headquarter which is being breeched by the immortals and robots to capture Kane and make her suffer. You and Hendricks have to push forwards and proceed through the carnage in the Singapore streets which have now descended into a massacre with people being executed in the streets by the immortals, Once you clear out different areas in the streets you will come to an open area where you'll be able to use a silent weapon and take out the soldiers from a rooftop and so this will be easier for you when you want to move forward Once you've cleared them out you can proceed forwards and make it into the area where the building is and where you'll have to go in, There is a big battle outside and you have to push them back and enter the building but as you do a big robot comes out and then so you have to shoot it in its weak spot then use a explosive weapon to destroy it. then you can proceed into the building but you will also have to fight robots as they appear from the fire in the building, you then make it to the room she is being held and that is where you find Kane but also have a confrontational fight with the leader of the immortals and tries to kill you due to you killing her brother the fight concludes with a death and this then ends the mission when you walk out of the building proving Hendricks wrong that she is still alive.

I have not yet completed the Black ops 3 campaign but so far I am finding the campaign and story really interesting and I look forward to see how it will finish.

Graphics - The graphics in the game and especially the campaign are the best in the games history and this will allow for the games to only get better and the online graphics are again really impressive and hopefully this can lead to the next installments to be good. These will continue to improve while the consoles are being able to get better and this will allow for game to be able to improve more each time.

Sound - The sound in the game are very realistic and immersive with the realistic gun sounds and explosions which give of an effect that you are actually in the game and the sounds of the background noise to is also better than it has been in previous installments.

Representation of Characters - Some of the main characters in the game are yourself, Hendricks and Taylor and at the start of the campaign you are insighted to a untold background story to the other characters and you are new so you are unaware of previous story so this leaves the player to guess what has happened, the characters to butt head a few times early on and this suggests that they had a bad relationship an that it didn't end well. There are a few sub characters who are still important but as not as much as there reasons are not clearly stated yet. The characters develop throughout the campaign and this allows for the story to get better and to let the player get more involved and attached to the campaign.

Target demographic - the target audience for the call of duty franchise is 18+ but now where they know a lot of there users are actually kids under 18 and this is sometimes shown by the content in the game and so this shows that they do target younger people but this is done sneakily so it still looks like it is aimed at its intended audience.

Has the genre changed over the years? - the genre of the game is still the same but little changes have been made such as when it sis based as all the early releases where ww2 games and now they're all futuristic which is a change in the genre, this has happened because they can be more creative with things in the future but to me it has now become old and many of the call of duty audience want a ww2 game or similar time again so it will appeal as fresh.

Understand How media Audiences Respond To Media Products

Understand How Media Audiences Respond To Media Products

Audience Response and Behaviour

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XYXMR62

(My Survey)

Scientists at the University of Rochester in New York took many tests to determine whether or not video games effect people’s behaviour. The researchers tested dozens of 18- to 25-year-olds who were not ordinarily video-gamers, splitting them into two groups. This is so that they can get a look how different people react to playing two different types of games, the first group were told to play adrenalin-packed action games such as Call of Duty 2 and Unreal Tournament, in which participant’s dash around online arenas shooting each other. The second group were given The Sims 2, a more sedate, strategy-based game that mimics the pace of everyday life, this will allow to see if there a positives from playing two different genres and if they have a positive or negative effect on the player. "Scientists discovered that those who had trained on the action games made decisions 25 per cent faster than their counterparts. They also answered just as many questions correctly as their strategy game-playing peers." this proves that the people playing action shoot em' up games actually make better quick decisions.

So far the results are showing that many people enjoy violent games and also no one said they don't like violent games which suggests that it is a popular game genre, there have been many people who have had an experience where the game they were playing or watched was shocking or was a surprise in a bad way. This goes to show that even if people have a bad experience they will still play the genre or game because there is something about it that they enjoy.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, had a mission called ‘No Russians’. This is an airport mission where CIA Agent Allen, under an alias called Alexei Borodin, is undercover and has to massacre civilians in an airport. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NMnnMRWJ-0 this was a very controversial part of the game and even made it onto the news around the world despite this the Call Of Duty makers kept it in the game but put in a message which would allow the player to play or not play the mission in the game which I believe was a good decision as this adds to the story in the game and this explains why the war started/ how it started.

Has a violent scene in a game ever surprised you? If so what game? "Occasionally, to give an example I would have to say the implied sex scene between Big Boss and Paz in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. She also gets raped in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes which is played on a cassette tape which I wasn't expecting." I found this a really good answer because not only did it go into good detail but it also gives a more personal feel to it and it allows you to understand what impact it may have on someone. "Tell-tale the walking dead season 3 episode 5 I think? A man called "carver" is beaten to death with a crowbar to the head, although I didn't play the game myself I watched a YouTube video."  This again shows the person has experienced something that genuinely surprised them and lets you imagine how they might have felt. "I have never been surprised or shocked with any scenes within a video game.” "No. Violence does not bother me in games" some people do not get effected by games and this shows in this answer which shows that people may be exposed to be used to different things. "Yes the scene in Bioshock where Andrew Ryan is killed with a golf club is quite sudden and disturbing." "Yes, it was the torture scene in GTA V" "A little, COD 5 world at war. opening scene the Japanese soldiers torture a us soldier in front of you." this does tell us that it is quite common that people are surprised by some parts in games and if it happens to a main character then it may effect people more.

Effects Debate

This is something that has been going on for a long time and this is debating whether or not violence effects people in video games, there has been apparent evidence to support and to disprove this so it is a topic that is locked in a non-moving debate. A key point that has been raised with gaming is that it makes people more violent which has no proof that it does or doesn't so it's an ongoing battle to find out if it does or doesn't. There will always be people who see games as being bad for you and there will always be people who see games as harmless and just there for fun and the anger stays in the game not effecting you once you leave the gaming zone.

Passive or Active Consumption
A passive consumption is when the audience doesn’t engage or question the games message/story but just accepts it. This can sometimes lead to games being poor or not being corrected in the sequel so it is highly important to speak you mind and let the developers know what's wrong with the game.

An active consumption is when the audience will engage and discuss what the game portrays to them and sometimes question the messages portrayed to the audience/player. This is a better way of letting the developers know what's wrong with the game and sometimes solution offers are useful and are considered more helpful than just criticising the game

Responses

This will let people know what their audience wants and would expect to be in the game. This lets the people get a gauge of how old there audience is and what they are most likely to be into at that age. This will give an indication of who and what type of people will buy or play the game and so this allows the people who make the games more aware of what is available and so this will be able to let people explore new games. In one of my questions where I asked if you had ever been shocked or surprised by a violent scene in a video game and I currently have 13 responses with 7 of them saying they have never experienced something that has shocked them or surprised them and so this leaves 6 people which have been shocked or surprised by something to some extent this shows that these six people may be more sensitive to violence in games where the other 7 might find it harder to be shocked which could suggest they have been open to more terms of violence than others.

This could suggest that many of the players who aren't scared could have anger at games but in my survey I only got 1 person who said they often rage at games where as 4 people said they don't but 8 people said they do sometimes so this tells me that people are still the same where it takes a certain situation to make them get a certain temper so this can suggest that anger is not effected during gaming. Although this could suggest that I also had a question which asked if people preferred violent games and my responses where 6 said that they did and 7 people said sometimes with a big 0 saying no so this could counter argument saying people that play violent games and are not going to change overnight but over a long process which has not been proven wrong or true so it again would only be used a speculation.

Concerning peoples favourite game the most two common mentioned games were Battlefield and Bioshock and so this could give a small indication that people are playing games that are violent but definitely not the most violent which to many could be seen as a positive. The two games have a few titles to their franchise but it is important to make sure that people don't get the wrong impression but as well as making sure the games are entertaining which I think happens with most games. This then allowed me to see how old people are who took my survey and it showed that most people were 18 or younger but still played 18+ games which shows that most of them have not been effected by the content, only two people who took my test were 19+ and again this shows that even though they have been open  to the content it has not effected them that much but even they have been surprised by the content or scene in one game and that can cause people above the age to be shocked which could suggest that the age should maybe raised for certain games that contain scenes that can affect people of the correct age. One of the closer questions was has a game ever influenced you and it had 6 people say yes and 7 people say no so this could be seen as a problem for people playing high certificated games which could lead them to doing something or behaving in a way they wouldn't normally behave but again there is no proof of this and sometimes it can be seen as just pretending which is normally seen in kids and so sometimes it can be meant in a playful way and would not cause distress to others. So even though people are influenced by games I see it as more as a fan way and is not under the influence they are in the game or perceive life as a video game.
