Ethics

Ethics: Impact of computer games on society?

Excess playing time: Playing video games for long periods of time can effect some peoples mental state were they believe they are inside or are part of the game and this can Lead to some people causing harm to others-"Boy 8 had just finished playing the game 'Grand Theft Auto IV' and then shot his 90 year old caregiver in the back of the head". Another example of the effects of excessive game time is "On November, 2010 a 16 year old killed his mother in her sleep after she took away his PlayStation”. There are some

positives that cam come from playing video games for prolonged amount of time which can give people faster reactions which could help prevent accidents this also gives people a chance to improve their language use and learn new word which can be benefit English grades and any other subject depending on the type of game.

Social isolation: While playing video games most people cut off outside interference which can lead to some people to become isolated from the rest of society. Some effects of social isolation can cause problems if life and can eventually cause the person to become and feel lonely and can even make people become mentally unstable when the play games and do not interact with others and so then they can start to believe that they are actually part of the game and start behaving in away seen in the game. Social isolation can be avoided if a few hours are spent communicating with someone this can also have a positive effect on the person emotionally.

Cost: This can be a physical or non-physical process which could cost you money to buy new games and equipment but also it could cost you friendships and relationships with other people if you are constantly playing video games. Losing friends and other people who are close to you can have an emotional effect on you, which is why there are many ways to minimize the occurrence of these costs due to help with physiological effects if you were to lose people who were close to you.

Separation from reality: This can happen when someone has spent and excessive amount of time playing a game that they start to believe that they are inside it and so they start to behave and act like they are actually in the game or that the game is real and this can then start to make the person lose touch of actually reality and then it can be a big effect on that person and people who are close to that person if they start to think this way. "Someone was addicted to playing 'Manhunt' and was that obsessed and believed that he was part of the game he murdered someone believing that he was still playing the game" this is an extreme of what can happen when you become separated from reality and believe that you are part of the video game. Most/all games now have warnings to try and prevent people becoming separated from reality.

Education;(hand-eye coordination, brain training): Some games have many positives, due to many games now having historic or words that are new to people which is helping them become more educated as well as helping peoples hand-eye coordination and reaction times which can have good outcomes and effects on people. Some games like 'Assassins creed 3' which is based during the 1800s and involves how America became independent which some people may not know much about and as well as some 'call of duty' games can teach people about world wars and important dates which some people may not know about. Brain training is also an important type of game due to it tasting you brain and keeping you alert which can slightly improve people’s chances of living longer due to the brain training keeping more people alert and focused that it can help keep the brain fit, brain training can benefit elderly people too due to the fact that brain training can keep you mind fit and train it to become sharp at figuring out puzzles.

Thinking and strategy skills: Some games require you to use different strategies to complete certain missions and this can be used in the future as a skill depending what career you decide to do, strategy is very important in some careers and so playing games can benefit that area if needed. Thinking is also a very important life skill which can be also developed in games with thinking out side of the box and also the quickness you think of a solution to a problem which could be used in your future career if quick thinking is needed and in some careers it may be a good skill to put down that you are quick at thinking on your feet and are quick at solving solutions which could be something that could potentially get you the job instead of someone else. So video games can help in certain areas with strategy and quickness of thinking and other areas that can be used to enhance your careers opportunity. "Playing video games can improve your decision time making and are more eligible to perform flexible tasks".

Psychological Factors- There are many psychological factors that can benefit and badly effect peoples thinking which can lead to very serious outcomes. Some of the effect can lead to crimes caused by people playing for pro-longed periods of time and it has happened several times before which have ended in death or serious injury to people who have been attacked by those psychological effects.

Use of sound: Sound can make people’s experience of games better or worse. A games soundtrack can be very important to peoples experience, a soundtrack can make a person feel a certain emotion at that certain point whether it be happy, sad or scared it can be a key part to the experience and sometimes can make the game seem better when the music fits the scene and makes you feel the emotion of what the characters are feeling.

High score listings: High score listings can make people play games for longer because they want to get to the next level and this becomes very addictive and can lead to making people play for long times on the game. This can also lead to make people more competitive and try that bit harder in real life to try and get better at what they are trying to do. Being number one on a score list can also give you a chance to compete against the very best at the game and can also lead to you winning prize money if you win and become the best at the game in the world.

Competitive games: This can make people more competitive in real life and can make people more determined to accomplish goals because they have become more competitive through gaming and trying to become the best. It is also a good way to have friendly completion as well with friends so you can see who is the best out of your friends.

Peer pressure: Peer pressure can lead you into buying a game because all your friends have it and play together and they could also be in the same clan and could persuade you into buying the game and joining them in completing the next mission or to help do something that they've seen that's funny.

Fun: Playing games can be extremely fun to do and can even help you to get rid of stress/anger which can lead you to take it out on enemies instead of people in real life which could stop you offending people. This can also help people to be happier by enjoying their time playing games or living out fantasies they have e.g. being a footballer, NHL  or a NFL player.

Leveling/Expectations: Playing games can lead to you have higher expectations for yourself and can even make you play more because you want to level up and become the highest level on the game or be the highest out of your friends.
